Could cancer patients with dangerous clots be treated at home?
NCT ID NCT07315347
First seen Jan 10, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 20 times
Summary
This study looks at whether people with active cancer who have a blood clot in their lungs (pulmonary embolism) can be safely treated at home instead of in the hospital. About 824 participants will be randomly assigned to either go home within 24 hours or stay in the hospital for at least 48 hours. The main goal is to see if home treatment is as good as hospital care at preventing new clots, major bleeding, or death within 14 days.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
home treatment (early discharge with phone follow-up) vs hospitalisation
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that many cancer patients with a pulmonary embolism can be safely treated at home instead of in the hospital, improving comfort and reducing healthcare costs.
What could go wrong
This is a non-inferiority trial, so it aims to prove home care is not worse than hospital care, not that it is better. The results may not apply to all cancer patients, and there is a risk of bleeding or recurrent clots that could be harder to manage at home.
Conditions
The condition(s) this trial relates to.
As listed by the trial registrant
The condition terms exactly as the trial's registrant entered them.
