Scientists probe Statin's hidden effect on muscle nutrient

NCT ID NCT02908425

Summary

This small, completed study aimed to understand how common cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins affect the body's processing of HMB, a substance derived from protein that may help protect muscle. Researchers measured levels of HMB and related compounds in the blood and urine of 13 older adults who were already taking statins. The goal was to gather basic knowledge to inform future strategies for preventing muscle loss, a known side effect of statin therapy.
