HIV study: could shots beat pills for reducing hidden virus and inflammation?
NCT ID NCT05303337
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study follows 120 people with HIV who switch to a long-acting injectable treatment or stay on oral pills. Researchers will measure HIV reservoirs, immune activation, and gut bacteria changes over a year. The goal is to see if injectable therapy reduces inflammation and hidden virus better than standard oral regimens.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy
What this could lead to
If this study shows that injectable treatment reduces HIV reservoirs and inflammation better than oral pills, it could point toward improved long-term health for people with HIV.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial, so it won't directly test a new cure or therapy. Results may not lead to changes in care, and differences between groups might be small or unclear.
