New HIV prevention shot gets a boost: enzyme may make injections last longer
NCT ID NCT05418868
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-stage study is testing a long-acting injectable HIV prevention drug called cabotegravir, combined with an enzyme (rHuPH20) that helps the drug spread under the skin. The goal is to see if this combination is safe and how the body processes it in 214 healthy adults. Researchers are also testing different doses and injection methods (under the skin or into muscle) to find the best approach for future studies.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cabotegravir (an HIV drug) and recombinant human hyaluronidase PH20 (an enzyme that helps the drug spread under the skin)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a longer-lasting, easier-to-take injectable HIV prevention option, potentially reducing how often shots are needed.
What could go wrong
This is a very early (Phase 1) study in healthy volunteers, not people with HIV. It only tests safety and drug levels, not whether it prevents HIV. Many early-stage studies do not lead to approved treatments.
