HIV patients may soon get long-acting shots at any day hospital
NCT ID NCT06159894
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at whether people with HIV can receive their long-acting injectable medication at general day hospitals instead of only at specialized HIV clinics. 90 patients who were already prescribed the injections were randomly assigned to one of the two settings. The main goal was to see how acceptable patients found the experience after 12 months, using a questionnaire. The study did not test the drug itself, only the location where it is given.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cabotegravir and rilpivirine (long-acting injectable HIV medication)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that people with HIV can get their long-acting injections at regular day hospitals, making treatment more convenient and accessible.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study that only measures patient acceptance, not health outcomes. Results may not apply to all settings or patients.
