Should hip fracture patients on blood thinners get surgery sooner?

NCT ID NCT07309848

First seen Jan 03, 2026 · Last updated Jun 24, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study looks at 374 hip fracture patients who take blood thinners (DOACs). Doctors often delay surgery due to bleeding concerns, but waiting may cause other problems. The study compares early surgery (within 24 hours) versus delayed surgery to see if early surgery increases the need for blood transfusions.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If early surgery proves safe, it could lead to faster recovery and shorter hospital stays for hip fracture patients on blood thinners.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a randomized trial, so results may be influenced by other factors. It only looks at transfusion risk, not other complications.
