Hip scope vs. new hip: which surgery wins for early arthritis?

NCT ID NCT04166227

First seen Mar 18, 2026

Summary

This study compared two surgeries for early hip arthritis in people aged 40 to 60: hip arthroscopy (a less invasive scope procedure) and total hip replacement. The goal was to see which surgery better improves pain, function, and quality of life. The trial was stopped early after enrolling 42 participants, so the results are limited.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Hip arthroscopy or total hip replacement surgery

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help determine whether a less invasive surgery (hip arthroscopy) is a better option than total hip replacement for middle-aged adults with early hip arthritis.

What could go wrong

This was a small pilot study that was terminated early, so results may not be reliable. The findings may not apply to all patients with hip arthritis.
