Does surgery for hip tendon tears actually work? a Sham-Controlled trial aims to find out

NCT ID NCT06398015

First seen Jun 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial tests whether open surgical reconstruction of a torn hip abductor tendon reduces pain better than a sham (placebo) surgery. Adults with MRI-confirmed tendon tears and lateral hip pain for over a year are randomly assigned to receive either real surgery or a sham procedure. The main outcome is patient-reported pain at six months using the HAGOS pain score.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

open surgical reconstruction of hip abductor tendon with bone anchors

What this could lead to

If surgery proves better than sham, it could become a standard treatment for chronic hip tendon tears that don't heal on their own.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, early-stage trial. Surgery may not outperform sham, and carries risks like infection, nerve damage, or prolonged recovery.
