Blood test may spot lung fluid in critically ill patients
NCT ID NCT07434908
First seen Feb 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 18 times
Summary
This study looks at whether a protein called heparin-binding protein (HBP) in the blood is linked to fluid buildup in the lungs of intensive care patients. Researchers will collect blood samples and measure lung fluid using a special monitoring system in 25 adults. The goal is to see if HBP levels can help doctors track lung edema without invasive procedures.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If a link is found, HBP could become a simple blood test to help doctors monitor lung fluid in critically ill patients.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early observational study (25 patients) that only looks for a correlation. It will not test any treatment, and results may not apply to all ICU patients.
