ER study pits haloperidol vs olanzapine for cannabis vomiting crisis
NCT ID NCT07246187
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether haloperidol or olanzapine works better to quickly reduce nausea, vomiting, and belly pain in people with cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) who come to the emergency department. About 114 frequent cannabis users will receive one of the two drugs as a shot, and their symptoms will be tracked on a 0-10 scale. The goal is to find which medication offers faster relief and helps patients avoid hospital admission.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
haloperidol and olanzapine (antipsychotic drugs given as injections)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could identify a better, faster way to relieve severe nausea and abdominal pain for people with cannabinoid hyperemesis in the emergency room.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial (114 people) testing two existing drugs, so the results may not apply to all patients. Both drugs have side effects like drowsiness or movement issues.
