Bunion surgery showdown: metal vs. human bone screws

NCT ID NCT06262204

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a screw made from donated human bone works as well as a standard metal screw for fixing bunions (hallux valgus). Forty adults will be randomly assigned to receive either the metal or the bone screw during surgery. Researchers will track pain, appearance, and bone healing over two years to see if the natural screw is a safe and effective alternative.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

human allogeneic cortical bone screw (Shark Screw®)

What this could lead to

If the bone screw works as well as metal, it could offer a natural alternative that may reduce the need for hardware removal surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 40 participants. The bone screw might not heal as reliably as metal, and there could be unknown risks with the allograft material.
