New hope for sickle cell: half-matched transplant without chemo

NCT ID NCT00977691

First seen May 04, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study tests a stem cell transplant from a half-matched family donor for adults with severe sickle cell disease or beta-thalassemia. Instead of high-dose chemotherapy, it uses low-dose radiation and immune-suppressing drugs to prepare the body. The goal is to see if this gentler approach can replace the diseased blood cells with healthy donor cells and reduce complications.
