New H5N8 bird flu vaccine enters human trials
NCT ID NCT06842173
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests two doses of an experimental H5N8 avian flu vaccine in 700 healthy adults and older adults. The vaccine is inactivated and contains an adjuvant to boost immunity. Researchers will monitor side effects and measure antibody levels to see if the vaccine triggers a protective immune response. The goal is to be ready for a potential bird flu outbreak in humans.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Monovalent Influenza Vaccine A (H5N8) (inactivated, fragmented, adjuvanted with IB160)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a safe and effective vaccine to protect people against H5N8 avian flu, helping to prevent a future pandemic.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase trial (Phase I/II) with only 700 participants, so the vaccine may not prove effective or safe enough in larger studies. Side effects are possible, as with any vaccine.
