Does a guidewire help or hurt? study tests two IV catheters Head-to-Head
NCT ID NCT06107361
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two types of long IV catheters used in patients whose veins are hard to see or feel. One catheter has a built-in guidewire to help with placement; the other does not. Researchers want to see if the simpler catheter works just as well, lasts as long, and costs less. About 360 adults will take part, and each will be randomly assigned to receive one of the two catheters.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ultralong intravenous catheter with or without a built-in guidewire
What this could lead to
If the simpler catheter works just as well, hospitals could use a cheaper, faster option for patients with hard-to-find veins.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study focused on equipment, not a new drug or cure. Results may not apply to all patients or hospital settings.
