POTS puzzle: scientists probe why carbs trigger dizziness

NCT ID NCT05375968

First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated Jun 17, 2026 · Updated 40 times

Summary

This study looks at why eating carbohydrates makes symptoms worse for people with Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), a condition that causes dizziness and rapid heartbeat upon standing. Researchers will measure blood flow changes in the abdomen after a sugary drink in 50 participants (25 with POTS, 25 healthy). They will also test whether blocking a gut hormone called GIP can reduce these symptoms. The goal is to understand the mechanism, not to test a new treatment.
