First seen Mar 29, 2026 · Last updated May 08, 2026 · Updated 8 times
Summary
This study tested whether placing a collagen sponge containing the antibiotic gentamicin inside the chest during heart surgery could prevent surgical site infections. It included 142 high-risk patients, such as those over 60 or with diabetes. The goal was to see if this simple addition to standard care reduces infections and helps the breastbone heal better.
