Antibiotic sponge could shield heart surgery patients from dangerous infections

NCT ID NCT07470112

Summary

This study is testing whether placing a small collagen sponge containing the antibiotic gentamicin inside the chest bone during heart surgery can prevent infections at the surgical site. It involves 142 patients who are at higher risk for infections due to factors like older age, diabetes, or obesity. Researchers will compare infection rates and healing in patients who receive the implant versus those who get standard care alone.
