Scientists grow & fix Patients' skin in lab to treat devastating genetic disease

NCT ID NCT04186650

Summary

This early-stage trial is testing a new gene therapy approach for a severe, painful genetic skin condition called Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (RDEB). Doctors take a small sample of a patient's skin cells, genetically correct them in a lab to fix the underlying cause, grow new skin sheets, and graft them back onto the patient's wounds. The main goal is to see if this process is safe and if the new, corrected skin can heal better and be more durable than the patient's fragile natural skin.
