Gene therapy aims to restore hearing in deaf children

NCT ID NCT07288580

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial tests a gene therapy called EHT102 for children with congenital hearing loss caused by mutations in the OTOF gene. Up to 30 children will receive a single injection in one ear to see if it safely improves hearing. The study is early-stage, focusing on safety and whether hearing thresholds can be lowered to 70 decibels or better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

EHT102 injection (gene therapy)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could restore hearing in children born deaf due to OTOF mutations, potentially reducing the need for hearing aids or cochlear implants.

What could go wrong

This is an early-phase trial with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to all. Gene therapy carries risks like immune reactions or incomplete hearing restoration.
