Scientists probe why a deadly baby infection takes hold

NCT ID NCT02471937

Summary

This study aimed to understand why a particularly dangerous strain of Group B Strep bacteria (called CC-17) colonizes and causes severe infections in newborns. Researchers enrolled 151 mothers to investigate how factors like the baby's gut bacteria, diet, and immune system might allow this specific strain to persist. The goal was to gather knowledge to help inform future prevention strategies, not to test a treatment.
