Sham surgery showdown: is spinal fusion just a placebo for back pain?

NCT ID NCT06709391

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 12, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This study aims to find out if spinal fusion surgery truly helps people with long-term low back pain. Ninety adults who have not improved with other treatments will be randomly assigned to receive either fusion surgery or a sham procedure (incision only, no fusion). Neither the patients nor their care teams will know which group they are in for six months. The main goal is to measure changes in back function and pain, helping doctors understand if the surgery offers real benefits beyond a placebo effect.
