Frozen section during breast surgery could spare patients a second operation

NCT ID NCT07591506

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether checking sentinel lymph nodes during breast cancer surgery (using a rapid freezing method) helps surgeons decide right away if more lymph nodes need to be removed, compared to the usual method of waiting for final results after surgery. About 142 women with breast cancer who haven't had prior treatment will take part. The goal is to see if the faster method improves surgical planning and reduces the need for additional procedures.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Intraoperative frozen section examination of sentinel lymph nodes
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could help surgeons make better decisions during breast cancer surgery, potentially reducing the need for a second operation.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center study with 142 participants. The frozen section technique may not always be accurate, and results may not apply to all breast cancer patients.
