Fish oil supplement aims to help head and neck cancer patients through tough treatment

NCT ID NCT07180576

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study will test whether a fish oil-enriched nutritional supplement, combined with weekly nutrition counseling, is feasible and safe for people with head and neck cancer undergoing chemoradiotherapy. Fifteen participants will start taking the supplement two weeks before treatment and continue through the end of radiation. The study will measure how many people can stick with the supplement, any side effects, and whether it helps maintain body weight and nutrition.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Fresubin Supportan (fish oil-enriched high calorie, high protein oral nutrition supplement) and weekly nutrition counseling

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that adding a fish oil supplement and nutrition counseling helps patients with head and neck cancer better tolerate chemoradiotherapy and maintain their nutrition.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study (15 people) focused on feasibility, not on proving the supplement works. It is too early to know if it will improve outcomes, and some patients may have side effects from the supplement.
