Gut bacteria swap explored as MS treatment in tiny trial

NCT ID NCT03594487

First seen Feb 03, 2026 · Last updated May 11, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This early-stage study tested whether a fecal transplant (donated stool given via colonoscopy) is safe and tolerable for people with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. Only 5 participants were enrolled, and the study was terminated early. The goal was to see if changing gut bacteria could affect the immune system and MS activity, but no conclusions can be drawn due to the small size and early termination.
