Bowel leakage study pits pelvic exercises against gel injections

NCT ID NCT03811821

First seen Mar 05, 2026 · Last updated May 17, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study tested two treatments for severe fecal incontinence (accidental bowel leakage) in 275 adults. Participants first tried basic management (diet, exercises). Those who didn't improve were randomly assigned to either biofeedback (pelvic muscle retraining) or injections of a bulking gel. The main goal was to see which treatment better reduced leakage episodes after 3 months, while also tracking safety and costs.
