Eardrum repair without surgery? new gel shows promise in trial
NCT ID NCT04960384
First seen Dec 15, 2025 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 23 times
Summary
This study tested a gel containing a natural growth factor (FGF-2) to close long-lasting holes in the eardrum. 52 adults with a dry eardrum hole for at least 6 months received either the gel or a placebo up to three times. The main goal was to see if the hole closed completely, measured by ear exams and photos. If successful, this could offer a simple, non-surgical treatment for a common hearing problem.
