Doctors test womb surgery to help babies with severe hernia breathe

NCT ID NCT04583644

Summary

This pilot study is testing a fetal surgery called FETO to see if it's feasible to perform on babies with the most severe form of a birth defect called congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). The surgery involves placing a tiny balloon in the baby's windpipe while still in the womb to help the lungs grow bigger before birth. The goal is to improve the baby's chance of survival after delivery by giving them more developed lungs.
