Operating on babies before birth to fight severe birth defect
NCT ID NCT01983345
Summary
This study tested a surgery performed on fetuses still in the womb to repair a severe spinal cord defect called myelomeningocele (a type of spina bifida). The goal was to see if fixing the defect before 26 weeks of pregnancy could reduce brain complications and lead to better long-term outcomes for the child. The results from 10 mothers who chose this prenatal surgery were compared to babies who had the standard surgery after they were born.
