Doctors test womb surgery to save babies with severe lung condition

NCT ID NCT02549820

Summary

This study is testing a fetal surgery procedure to help babies with a severe form of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) survive after birth. In severe CDH, a hole in the diaphragm allows organs to press on the lungs, preventing them from growing properly. Doctors temporarily place a tiny balloon in the baby's airway while still in the womb to block it, which helps the lungs grow bigger and stronger before birth. The goal is to improve survival for these high-risk babies.
