Poop pills take on superbugs in new clinical trial
NCT ID NCT07265817
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether taking capsules containing fecal matter from healthy donors can eliminate drug-resistant bacteria living in the gut. Sixty patients with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae will receive either the real transplant or a placebo for three days. The goal is to see if the treatment can turn their lab tests negative for the superbug.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
fecal microbiota transplant capsules
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a way to remove dangerous drug-resistant bacteria from the gut without antibiotics, reducing infection risk.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 participants. The treatment may not work for everyone, and there is a small risk of infection or side effects from the transplant.
