Tiny trial hopes fatty acid oil boosts preterm baby development

NCT ID NCT07311382

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether giving very preterm babies (born before 32 weeks) a special oil containing arachidonic acid and DHA helps them absorb these essential fatty acids. Fifteen babies will receive the supplement from their first days of life until 36 weeks or discharge. Researchers will measure fatty acid levels in blood and also look at effects on brain function, lung development, and growth.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

oil containing arachidonic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a way to improve brain and lung development in very preterm babies by giving them essential fatty acids early.

What could go wrong

This is a very small early study with only 15 babies, so results may not apply to all preterm infants. It is designed to measure absorption, not to prove health benefits.
