New dye could spot 'Flesh-Eating' bacteria in minutes, saving lives

NCT ID NCT06877793

Summary

This study is testing a new imaging technique to diagnose necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs), often called 'flesh-eating' infections, much faster than current methods. Researchers will inject a safe, FDA-approved dye (ICG) and use a special camera to see how blood flows in the infected tissue, as these dangerous infections often block blood vessels. The goal is to create a tool that helps doctors quickly tell the difference between a life-threatening NSTI and a less severe infection, so treatment isn't delayed.
