New dental filling hardens in seconds, could cut chair time
NCT ID NCT04708223
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested a new dental filling material that hardens in just 3 seconds with a special light, compared to standard fillings that take up to 40 seconds. Fifty-one adults with cavities or old fillings needing replacement received both types of fillings in different teeth. The goal was to see if the fast-curing material works just as well over two years, focusing on tooth sensitivity and overall quality.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Tetric PowerFill / Tetric PowerFlow (fast-curing dental composite)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to faster and more convenient dental fillings that require less time in the dentist's chair.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with 51 participants. The new material may not be as durable or effective as standard fillings in the long term.
