Invisible light shield tested to protect vulnerable seniors from viruses

NCT ID NCT05084898

Summary

This study tested whether a special, safe type of ultraviolet light (called far-UVC) installed in common areas could help prevent respiratory virus infections like COVID-19 and the flu among elderly residents in long-term care homes. It involved about 550 residents across three facilities, comparing areas with the special lights to areas with regular lights, while all standard cleaning continued. The goal was to see if this extra layer of protection could reduce illness rates in these high-risk settings where traditional measures like masking are difficult.
