New MRI technique may prevent facial paralysis during brain tumor surgery

This study tested a new MRI technique called diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) to map the facial nerve before surgery for vestibular schwannoma, a benign brain tumor. The goal was to see if the scan could accurately show the nerve's position, helping surgeons avoid accidental injury that can cause permanent facial weakness. The study involved 38 adults scheduled for tumor removal, who received an extra 10-minute MRI scan before their operation.
