Scientists uncover how eye movements could rewire traumatic memories

NCT ID NCT06878807

First seen Sep 30, 2025 · Last updated May 10, 2026 · Updated 28 times

Summary

This study looked at why moving your eyes back and forth (like in EMDR therapy) helps reduce the emotional impact of traumatic memories. Researchers tested 112 healthy adults using a simple eye-blink conditioning task to see if eye movements speed up the brain's ability to unlearn a fear response. The goal was to better understand the working memory hypothesis, which suggests that doing two things at once (recalling a memory and moving your eyes) overloads the brain and weakens the memory's emotional charge.
