New needle technique aims to protect Kids' breathing during arm surgery

NCT ID NCT07382063

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a new way to give a nerve block for upper limb surgery in children aged 6-12. The goal is to see if placing the numbing medicine outside the nerve sheath (extra-fascial) reduces the risk of temporary diaphragm paralysis compared to the standard method. Seventy-two children will be enrolled, and doctors will use ultrasound to check diaphragm movement after the block.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Ropivacaine

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a safer nerve block technique for children that reduces the risk of diaphragm paralysis.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 72 children, so results may not apply to all patients. The procedure still carries risks like nerve damage or allergic reaction.
