Teens with cancer get a workout prescription: could exercise protect their hearts?
NCT ID NCT05539794
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a supervised exercise program (aerobic, strength, and breathing exercises) can help teenagers with cancer maintain heart health and overall fitness during intensive treatment. About 136 teens from four hospitals in Madrid will be randomly assigned to either the exercise group or usual care. Researchers will measure heart function, fitness, quality of life, and other health markers at the start, end of treatment, and three months later.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
supervised physical exercise program (aerobic, strength, and breathing exercises)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that regular exercise during cancer treatment helps protect heart function and improves overall well-being for teens.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial. Exercise may not be feasible for all teens during intensive treatment, and benefits may vary.
