Can switching drugs outsmart resistant breast cancer?
NCT ID NCT07646171
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether the drug everolimus can help women with a common type of advanced breast cancer (HR-positive, metastatic) whose cancer has stopped responding to a similar drug called alpelisib. The trial will enroll 19 women and measure how many see their tumors shrink. Researchers hope the response rate will be higher than the 9.5% seen in a previous trial.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
everolimus (Afinitor) combined with endocrine therapy
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new treatment option for women with HR+ metastatic breast cancer whose cancer has stopped responding to a PI3K inhibitor.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-phase study (19 participants) with no comparison group. The hoped-for benefit may not appear, and side effects of everolimus can include mouth sores, rash, and infections.
