New calculator could spare thousands of newborns from unnecessary needles and antibiotics
NCT ID NCT06643052
First seen Apr 10, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 9 times
Summary
This study will check if using a special calculator helps doctors better manage suspected early-onset sepsis in newborns. The calculator estimates a baby's risk of infection and suggests the best course of action. Researchers will compare care before and after the calculator was introduced at one hospital, looking at how many blood tests and antibiotics were used, and the costs involved. About 6,300 full-term newborns will be included.
