Could a simple nerve block shield kidneys during cancer surgery?

NCT ID NCT07297433

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether a nerve block called the erector spinae plane block can protect kidney function during laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery. Sixty adults having this surgery were divided into two groups: one received the nerve block plus standard anesthesia, the other received only standard anesthesia. Researchers measured kidney blood flow during surgery and checked kidney function afterward using blood tests and a special protein called NGAL. The goal was to see if the nerve block helps keep kidneys working well during and after the operation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Erector spinae plane block (a nerve block injection)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that using this nerve block during surgery helps protect kidney function, potentially reducing the risk of kidney injury after colorectal cancer surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It measures temporary changes in kidney function, not long-term outcomes or survival.
