New shot could tame stubborn shingles nerve pain
NCT ID NCT07256145
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether an ultrasound-guided nerve block with steroids can reduce pain in people with post-herpetic neuralgia—persistent nerve pain after shingles—that hasn't improved with standard treatments. Sixty adults aged 20 to 70 will receive either the nerve block or usual care. The goal is to see if the block provides better pain relief and higher patient satisfaction, while tracking any side effects like pain or infection.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
erector spinae plane block with steroids
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new, non-drug option for people with stubborn shingles nerve pain.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (60 people) comparing a procedure to usual care, so results may not apply widely. Risks include pain, irritation, or infection at the injection site.
