Tiny additive could cut risk in abdominal pain blocks

NCT ID NCT04959123

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether adding diluted epinephrine to the numbing drug ropivacaine during a TAP block (a pain block for abdominal surgery) lowers the peak amount of ropivacaine in the blood. Forty adults having laparoscopic colectomy received either ropivacaine alone or with epinephrine. The goal was to see if epinephrine reduces the risk of drug toxicity. Results may help make this common pain block safer.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ropivacaine with or without epinephrine

What this could lead to

If adding epinephrine significantly lowers peak ropivacaine levels, it could lead to safer pain-blocking procedures for abdominal surgeries.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed pharmacokinetic study (40 people) that only measures drug levels, not clinical outcomes. Results may not change practice or apply to all patients.
