Diabetes drug takes on statins in battle against fatty liver
NCT ID NCT07180745
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether empagliflozin (a diabetes drug) works better than statins for treating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its more severe form, NASH. 400 obese, diabetic adults with NAFLD/NASH will take one of five drug combinations daily for 3 months. Researchers will measure liver fat and stiffness using a special ultrasound (FibroScan) and track side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Empagliflozin, Atorvastatin, Pioglitazone
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that empagliflozin, alone or with statins, is a better option than statins alone for reducing liver fat and stiffness in people with NAFLD/NASH.
- What could go wrong
- This is a Phase 4 trial, so the drugs are already approved, but it's still early for this specific use. The 3-month treatment period is short, and results may not show lasting benefits or apply to all patients.
