NCT ID NCT06924749

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This completed Phase 2 trial tested whether inhaling a green tea extract called EGCG could help cancer patients with moderate-to-severe COVID-19 pneumonia. 111 participants received either EGCG mist or a placebo three times daily for 7 days. The study looked at lung CT scan improvements, symptom relief, and safety. EGCG is known for anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects, but results are not yet available.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate), a green tea extract, given as an inhaled mist

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a safe, plant-based treatment option for COVID-19 pneumonia in cancer patients, reducing lung inflammation and improving recovery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed Phase 2 trial with no published results yet. The benefit may be modest or not better than standard care, and the findings may not apply to non-cancer patients.
