Brain wave device may help detect pain in dementia patients

NCT ID NCT06256666

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether a brain wave monitor (EEG) could objectively measure pain in 30 people with cognitive decline who struggle to describe their pain. Researchers used a standard hospital device (BIS) and machine learning to find brain signals linked to pain. The goal is to develop a tool that helps caregivers and doctors assess pain more accurately in this vulnerable group.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this research could lead to a reliable, objective way to measure pain in people with dementia or cognitive decline, improving their care.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 30 participants. The findings are exploratory and need to be confirmed in larger, more diverse groups before any practical tool can be developed.
