Final ultrasound before birth could prevent unnecessary C-Sections
NCT ID NCT07433751
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether doing an ultrasound within 24 hours of delivery can more accurately detect fetal macrosomia (birth weight ≥4000 g). Current ultrasounds done weeks before birth can be off by 6-10%, leading to unnecessary inductions or C-sections. Researchers will compare ultrasound estimates to actual birth weights in 285 pregnant women with suspected large babies.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ultrasound
What this could lead to
If successful, this could improve how doctors detect large babies before birth, potentially reducing unnecessary labor inductions or C-sections.
What could go wrong
This is an observational accuracy study, not a treatment trial. Even if ultrasound is more accurate close to delivery, it may not change outcomes or reduce complications.
