ICU shock study: delaying arterial catheters may be just as safe

NCT ID NCT03680963

First seen Jan 07, 2026 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study looked at whether waiting to place an arterial catheter (a tube in an artery to monitor blood pressure) in critically ill patients with shock is as safe as placing it early. Over 1,000 adults in intensive care were randomly assigned to either early placement or delayed placement (only if absolutely needed). The main goal was to compare death rates at 28 days between the two groups.
