Early surgery may beat laser for diabetic eye damage
NCT ID NCT07586787
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two treatments for early proliferative diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that causes abnormal blood vessels in the eye. One group gets early microincision vitrectomy surgery plus laser, while the other gets standard laser therapy alone. The goal is to see which approach better shrinks these abnormal vessels and improves vision over 12 months. About 100 adults with type 2 diabetes are being enrolled.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Microincision vitrectomy surgery (MIVS) and panretinal photocoagulation (laser therapy)
What this could lead to
If early surgery works better than laser, it could become a new standard treatment to control diabetic eye disease and prevent vision loss.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 100 participants. Surgery carries risks like infection or bleeding, and the results may not apply to all patients.
