New sensor could catch dangerous surgical leaks before they become emergencies

NCT ID NCT04582708

Summary

This study tested a small device that attaches to a patient's surgical drain to continuously monitor fluid after abdominal surgery. The goal was to see if changes in the fluid's chemistry could signal a dangerous internal leak much earlier than current methods. Researchers collected data from 316 patients to build a model for early detection and check the device's safety and ease of use.
